Anefanos Tours Apeiranthos Walking Tour Naxos

Anefanos Tours offers walking tours through the marble-paved streets of Apeiranthos in central Naxos. A different image and experience of the island’s heartland—one that barely resembles a typical island. With us, you’ll explore the mountain village landscape, walk its stone paths, admire its unique architecture, and finally, enjoy local tastes in shaded courtyards and hidden corners.

WHAT DO OUR TOURS INCLUDE?

A walk through the village, starting and ending at the Central Church (Panagia).

  • Ascent through the upper part of the village—via its distinctive alleys—with the first stop at the Women’s Traditional Art Cooperative workshop, where visitors see how traditional Aperathitissa weavings are made and used on the loom.
  • A tour through the upper village’s narrow lanes, with insights into local architecture, culture, and history. The route includes references to stone mills, family crests, marble doorways, and the vital role of stone (emery and marble) in everyday life and local craftsmanship.
  • Walking through covered passageways (stiasta), visitors will see the towers and learn how the village inhabitants have survived over the centuries in this rugged mountain setting.
  • Visit to the traditional wood-fired bakery.
  • A stop in the village for food tasting and either coffee or a full meal.
  • We continue toward the endpoint along the central street (Platsa–Panagia) that splits the village in two, making stops at the five museums—Archaeological, Folklore, Natural History, Fine Arts, and Geological—all of which guests may visit freely, with entrance covered by us and guided by the respective curators.
  • The tour concludes in front of Panagia Aperathitissa, where we highlight two notable locals: Protopapadakis and Glezos.
  • Final stop at the Women’s Cooperative exhibition shop, where guests see how the loom’s woven cloth becomes useful everyday items for the home.

"T’ Aperathou, the strange village that builds and weaves, composes verse, sings and dances. The paradoxical village of the rugged emery miners, the breezy shepherds, the tireless ploughmen who spin its life from birth to today— the curious village of hundreds of creators, mystics, and hierophants of art, science, culture, society, and life itself." — Manolis Glezos

Come and experience the unique and authentic spirit of the “marble village,” Apeiranthos.
